Before you contact a tree service company

A few clear details about the tree, the site, and your goals can help a company understand what you need.

Describe what you have noticed

Note where the tree stands and how to identify it among other trees. If you know the species, include it; if you do not, say so. Describe the change or concern in ordinary language and when you first noticed it.

ISA identifies hanging branches, cracks, decay, and changes around roots as concerns for professional evaluation. An observation is not a diagnosis. Do not approach a damaged tree to collect details or rely on photographs to establish that it is safe.

  • Which tree are you asking about?
  • What changed, and when?
  • What would you like help understanding?

Explain access and the surroundings

Describe gates, steps, terrain, nearby structures, and where vehicles can reach the site. Mention overhead wires and any access restrictions without moving closer to investigate. If photographs can be taken from an already safe location, ask the company which views would be useful.

Tell the company whether the tree is on your property, near a boundary, or in a public area. If ownership or permission is unclear, raise that early rather than assuming you can authorize the work.

State the goal and ask what happens next

Explain whether you want help with clearance, tree condition, a stump, storm damage, or an assessment before deciding on work. Say what outcome you want, while leaving the technical recommendation to the professional.

Ask whether a site visit is needed, who will examine the tree, and how the company will explain its proposed scope. Confirm the best direct contact and the information they need from you. InfestAway provides business information; it does not arrange a visit or submit a service request on your behalf.

For storm or electrical hazards, keep clear

Storm-damaged trees and limbs can move unexpectedly, including after the weather has passed. Stay clear of damaged trees, hanging branches, and fallen wires. Do not cut, pull, or move tree material to inspect or clear the area.

ISA advises contacting the electricity provider when tree parts touch utility lines, and contacting the appropriate emergency service, utility, or arborist for storm hazards. Do not wait for a message to the directory to address an immediate danger.
